Jeff Tweedy often takes time out of what's probably a crazy Wilco schedule—his is the biggest alt/jam crossover going, after all—to strip his songs to the bone. It's a wholly different experience from the lengthy Wilco rock-outs of late, and a more personal, exciting one. Alone, Tweedy picks through his catalog and delivers bare-bones versions of songs from all over the map, from recent Wilco joints to covers to Loose Fur's "Laminated Cat," each delivered with a sincerity and resonance that's tough to duplicate in front of a rock band.
Sunken Treasure follows acoustic, scruffy Tweedy down the West Coast, where he plays beautiful theaters to mostly quiet, respectful crowds, though he does need to stop and ask the talkers at one point what he can do to serve them better. Intro bumpers for each of the five cities provide some on-the-road insight, too: Tweedy is a little weird, but dedicated, and he loves playing. And when he hits highlights on stage, like "A Shot In The Arm" and "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart," anything more than just his voice and guitar—and sometimes the voices of the crowd singing along—would feel extraneous.
