The Killion Floor collects singles and compilation tracks by the Los Angeles retro-funk collective Orgone, which has become an in-demand concert attraction over the past decade for its stretched-out, beat-driven performances. Orgone recalls acts like Fela Kuti, Trouble Funk, and War, but with a heavy dose of disco, as on Killion's "Dialed Up," where the deep groove and diva vocals are so authentic, they could be samples. Orgone at LP length does wear a little thin, because the band's slavishness gradually begins to come off as too studied. Still, it's hard to deny the structural and cultural complexity of a song like "It's What You Do," which sounds like an Afrobeat version of a '70s cop-show theme.
