‘Rogue One’ Director Says ‘There Is So Much Inaccuracy’ Surrounding Making of ‘Star Wars’ Prequel: ‘We All Worked Together Until the Entire Last Minute’1

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards is once again addressing the multiple reports about the 2016 film requiring extensive reshoots overseen by Tony Gilroy (the Andor creator was hired by Lucasfilm to join the Rogue One team in June 2016).

On a recent episode of KCRWs The Business podcast, Edwards claimed there is so much inaccuracy surrounding the making of the Star Wars prequel.

The stuff thats out there on the internet about what happened on that film there is so much inaccuracy about the whole thing, Edwards said. Tony [Gilroy] came in, and he did a lot of great work, for sure. No doubt about it. But we all worked together until the entire last minute of that movie.

While reports mentioned that Lucasfilm sidelined Edwards and brought in Gilroy to write new dialogue and direct additional scenes, Edwards said he was involved in the five weeks of reshoots on Rogue One, citing the signature final scene that the team filmed of Darth Vader.

The very last thing that we filmed in the pickup shoot was the Darth Vader corridor scene, Edwards said. I did all of that stuff.

When Variety asked Edwards about the Rogue One reports in September, the director responded, Look, the only thing I can say is I was incredibly lucky.

I got to make a Star Wars film. I won the lottery, in that sense, he continued. The idea of someone as privileged as me in any way implying that it was anything other than the amazing experience that it was to some extent like, I dont have any empathy for that person, and I dont want to be that person either.

Edwards latest sci-fi epic The Creator, starring John David Washington as the leader of a war between humans and AI, is currently in theaters.
