For all its late-night TV screenings and subsequent incarnation as a short-lived series, the 1977 film Logan's Run—set in a post-apocalyptic society that allows its citizens to live in luxury and pleasure before executing them on their 30th birthday—didn't exactly cry out for a sequel. It never got one, either, but it did get this new soundtrack to the imaginary sequel Logan's Sanctuary courtesy of Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, The Moog Cookbook) and Brian Reitzell (Redd Kross). A heady mix of '70s soundtrack and synthesizer clichés, it doesn't have much in common with Jerry Goldsmith's original score, but Run's undoubtedly down-market sequel probably wouldn't be able to afford him anyway. Instead, it gets such themes as the roboticized march "Islands In The Sky," the lazily repetitive (or hypnotic, depending on your outlook) "Pleasure Dome 12" and "Endless Tunnels," and even a theme song with guest vocals by Manning's former Jellyfish bandmate Jason Falkner. As music, it's not much, but as straight-faced conceptual comedy it's brilliant, a fact only enhanced by graphic designer Mike Mills' believably retro cover art, press stills (from, among others, director Roman Coppola), and an elaborate plot description that matches the music perfectly. It's billed as the first in a series, so here's hoping Beyond Zardoz is in the works.
