Värdegrundskursen [English translation]

[Intro] 1

Yeah

Eating some fucking humble pie 2

They send people to the values class these days

When they mess up

Yeah

Values, they make camp by the stock market

But the shareholders didn't take the class

But by spring there'll be a huge party

So even Anders Borg 3lets his hair down

Whaddaya mean make your own decisions?4

I'm not a white middle aged man who prays to god

Who are you to make decisions about the bun in the oven?

Guessing that Mrs. Hägglund swallows 5

What's the tax rate at on the Cayman Islands?

And then the question is how much the diapers weigh

Cuz' granny lies there with pressure ulcers (6) feces

The value class seems like a good solution

Everything can be counted

You can count on that, that they have been taught from the day they learned to walk

Count again, and count down

And they'll send you to the values class till you learn it

[Chorus]

The values class, have you signed up?

With Södertälje hospital 7 and the police of Rosengård8

The values class, have you signed up?

Yeah, good so just take a seat beside me

If life was a party with a glamour theme

Then I'd live until Carema got their claws in me9

If Schlingmann was my wing man then I'd easily get the bird 10

And pretend I was invited

Instead I get to zoom in on LL Cool Bild on my widescreen11

Take it slow, notice him quibble 12

He always shifts the focus, no matter how much blood was spilled

Smiling at the camera with his blue steel 13

Look at Annie Lööf, she's singing 'I need love'14

And you feel pissy since she was carousing on your pay15

Then refers to it as a seminar in the ledger

I bet they taught them values at the seminar

But if they didn't already know right from wrong

Or if it's really symptoms of the system

When should you try to teach an old dog to sit better

And when should you really just end its suffering

[Chorus x2]

Should we clean up the center party on Stureplan

But we won't provide any tax deductions16

Hollatchaboi 17, 100 miles18 away, the red north19

You won't find any Johan Norberg column there20

What are these classes about values

Outside of the subway barriers and the city toll is where you really learn, boy

Cuz' there's no substance21 in this shallow world

Stop acting as if you established it all22

[Chorus x2]

1. At the start of the song they say some stuff to set the tone of the song which I've included here. The Swedish lyrics goes: Yeah

Fucking pudel

Dom skickar folk till värdegrundskursen nu för tiden

När dom strular till det

Yeah2. This was the closest idiom I could find. 'Göra en pudel' (make a poodle) means that you've made a huge mistake and have to fess up and usually apologise; say you forgot the iron on at home and burned down the apartment/house. Your mistake, you're at fault and you have to confess and apologise. Then people could say you had to 'make a poodle'. Or someone said a racial slur on tv and have to publicly apologise? That'd be the same.3. former Swedish minister of finances, had his hair in a pony tail. He also showed his wiener to people at a party, which he had to apologise for4. 'vadå' is a question, basically translates as "what do you mean" and is generally used informally in spoken language, hence my informal translation5. Göran Hägglund was the political candidate/leader for the Swedish Christian Party, the joke obviously being that she doesn't use birth control and swallows instead - also 'spunket' is informal for semen6. "and in" is implied, but not said due to the pause between the words7. They had a racist scandal where it was reported that the staff in the ICU (intensive care) treated people of a specific ethnicity differently, aka worse, than another. They had to publicly apologise from what I can remember8. Tension between the police of a suburban area in Malmö and the inhabitants of said area. Have been lots of reports of excessive violence and discrimination from what I can recall, but I'd suggest looking into it yourselves if it piques an interest9. Carema (formerly, now Vardaga) is a company dealing with private elderly care, they changed their name after the scandal. From what I can recall it was basically maltreatment of the elderly in their care10. Think they refer to former Swedish minister of communication Per Schlingmann. Honestly don't remember if he made an oopsie. But some refer to Schlingmann as the former "propaganda minister" due to their clashing political ideologies which might be the case with the artists (left vs. right). The joke then would probably be that he'd be able to convince anyone of any idiotic idea being a good one (and again, bear in mind the left vs. right ideology and how that affects how we see an event)11. Carl Bildt, was in the same party as Schlingmann, 'Moderaterna' (the moderates - right on the political scale)12. avoiding an argument, something politicians are usually good at13. Blue steel was a British nuclear missile. The other part of the joke being that it's blue (right politically instead of red - left)14. Annie Lööf is the current leader of the Center party who were in a political block with the political right wing parties in Sweden at the time of this song15. tax money16. RUT-avdrag is tax deduction on household services (Renhållning - Sanitation; Underhåll - Maintenance; Tvätt - Cleaning), it was the center party who wrote the bill that was passed in 2007. People in favour of it usually say that it decreases unreported employment and enables people who otherwise wouldn't or couldn't afford the services to make use of it (thus stimulating the economy with more money in motion) while also increasing salaries for those working in these services. Those against it tend to argue that it only benefits those who already have quite a bit of money and thus works only as a tax deduction for the rich, which then only widens the economic inequities in society and that the money could be spend better elsewhere17. Holler at ya boy18. 1 mile in Sweden is 10 km, which is about 6.2 English Miles - not really important in this context though19. The northern part of Sweden is generally more supportive of left wing politics20. Johan Norberg is a liberal and a capitalist who writes columns in a Swedish newspaper, needless to say the song writer/lyricist is not impressed by his political views21. lit. deep/depth, but substance fits better in English22. "grunda" is likely meaning "grundat", the first being informal speech, the second being how you spell it. Pretty much a play on words and pronunciation. The last 2 sentences look identical but have different tonal sounds, which in Swedish can change its meaning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tone_(linguistics), to put it really simple it's somewhat similar to changing your pitch based on whether you ask a question or stating something, i.e. thirsty?/ thirsty! which completely changes the meaning of the word
