I'm a gaucho born in 1963,
Palermo neighborhood saw me growing up,
and there I met Pantaleón the magician
who lives here on Yaguaron street.
And one day we were very drunk
he said: "I can make you travel to the past"
I thought: "to do the lap of honor in 1950, 1
or to become a tupamaro in the 60's"
Tupamaro, I wasn't wrong
Tupamaro, I wanted to be
Tupamaro, I asked the magician.
I traveled in time and I crashed without being expected
they almost confuse me with Amodio Perez. 2
I told them that I came from the future
and that I'd fight with them to change it.
Short time later the bad luck was such
that we ended all imprisoned.
We started to dig with picks and shovels
to escape from the military torture.
Tupamaro, I wasn't wrong
Tupamaro, I wanted to be
Tupamaro, I asked the magician.
I told them that we would have it very bad
if the revolution couldn't make it.
But the spell ended when I reached the goal
escaping through the Punta Carretas tunnel. 3
And when I returned I found between my clothes
the famous Thirty Three Orientals flag. 4
The fascists who are still looking for it don't know the secret
that the flag is in the Cuarteto's bass drum
Tupamaro, I wasn't wrong
Tupamaro, I wanted to be
Tupamaro, I asked the magician.
Tupamaro.
Tupamaro.
I'm a Tupamaro.
1. A reference to the Maracanazo, when the Uruguayan football team became the world champion after defeating Brazil by 2 to 1, at the Maracana stadium.2. A former Tupamaro who after getting caught, traded secret information about the group for his freedom. He is seen as a traitor to their cause. 3. In September 1971 over 100 imprisoned Tupamaros escaped the Punta Carretas prison by digging a hole across their cells and then a tunnel that led from the floor of one ground-level cell to the living room of a nearby home. 4. In 1969 the original Thirty Three Orientals flag was stolen by another guerrilla group (OPR 33), and is still missing.
