They that once were
In the waning hours of day
They often come near
In fleeting moments
To see them once again
To hear their voices
Their laughter, and pains
All that but once were
N'er again to be so
In youthful times ago
When foolishness reigned
And naivety triumphed there
Their wisdom attractive
That magnetized life's cause
It was a boone for others
Those they never had met
The liability unsaid lingered
But in its continuance ongoing
There came a frightful day
Gone, they that once were
Then the realism of living came
As though an uncaring candle
That stole away the innocence
The lie of immortality naïve
Death is an old companion
Trudging up that hill to inter
Knowing and recognizing too
That no one gets out alive
Should they have not known
That even in the smallest act
The impact was indeed eternal
Shared beyond touch to others
So a legacy given lives on
Begotten, the deeds and words
Their temples gone to decay
Their essence remains behind
Now to look back through days
To take stock in life's purpose
In the reasons for existence
It remains simple, to live on
