Vanquished in battle
Though a dedicated soldier
His army sent up the white flag
Mercy requested in war's wane
To lose buddies is a sad shame
That is the undone legacy of battle
Days lived in battle are years in life
They follow you home unwanted
No one sings the praises aloud
To those defeated causes lost
Once full of slogans and vigor
Now entombed in silent rubble
The shock of war is not the front
It is the destruction of the rear
For what mandate did not destroy
The enemy laid waste to it all
Loved ones forced to camps
Forced to labor, to perish
There is no room for justice
For those noncombatants near
All that was is now gone
All that was grand and wonderful
Now reduced to dust and savagery
The cost of war so very high
There is no respite for the lost
The winners write history's truths
All but to survive a conflict lifelong
In a war ongoing, and we're wrong
