The Legend of Sina and the Eel lyrics

Long, long ago

In the ancient island of Savai'i

Lived a girl named Sina

She befriended an eel

And every evening under the moonlight

They would swim and talk

He told Sina of how he once was a prince

He grew larger and more demanding of Sina's love

In time this frightened Sina

And she escaped by running to relatives in a nearby village

Despite these attempts to get away from the eel

He would follow her

And often appear in waters wherever Sina went

She told her uncle and cousin of her fear of the eel

And soon her cousin was sent to confront the eel

In a battle the eel's head was severed

And in his final breath

He asked Sina to bury his head

And that one day, as a reminder of his love

His head would sprout a tree

That would bear fruit with a refreshing nectar

The eel's face would be on the fruit: two eyes and a mouth

So that each time Sina would drink from the fruit

She would be, in fact, kissing him.
