1st verse:
Emotionally drained, all fed up,
I left my home, slamming the door shut.
Trying to swallow those accusing words,
yet having them all rush back in my mind.
Then I saw the dead bird,
took it on my palms and off the street,
I was sensing the warmth in it,
as if it still were able to live.
Pre-chorus:
That moment, the stars lowered themselves;
the silence itself screamed into the night.
Chorus:
Heading to heaven tonight,
one of us will escape;
the other one will remain and fight.
Heading to heaven tonight,
who will open those gates?
Who would believe in love?
2nd verse:
This is a cold, windy place.
Ugly are the windows
of these apartment blocks.
But even if it were to rain nails
I would still push forward;
I knew that right then and there.
Then I lowered the dead bird
back on the ground,
digging a hole for it
under a rose shrub,
on top of which I gathered
a small mound of sand.
I walked away,
and still remain here.
(Pre-chorus)
(Chorus)
Bridge:
Echoes on the streets;
the traffic lights are blinking yellow.1
I’m walking along a long flight of stairs.
The cold morning
is slashing the skies open with its knife.
And I will no longer be afraid of anything!
(Chorus × 2)
1. Traffic lights in Finland are programmed to blink yellow when they’re offline and should be disregarded. This typically happens if there’s a malfunction of some kind in their control system or if the intersection has so little traffic during certain hours (such as by night) that controlling traffic by lights would be more of a hindrance than serve a useful purpose.
