He wasn't a grenadier
Nor an athlete
All he had as weapons were
His heart, hands and shovel
The land was destroyed
It had to rise from its ashes
Then Avdija worked
Like ten armies would
One of those days, the 23rd of October
A golden badge of merit
Shone on his chest
Avdija would remember that time for a long while
That afternoon in the fall
He would remember for a long time
The words of his friend:
"You are our pride Avdija,
You are our pride like the flag"
His picture was published
In the middle of the factory newspaper
His day is hit
And his dream is
A thousand tons in a day
New times had come
And Avdija got lost somewhere
We all forgot about him
Because we had enough excavators
Only sometime
Before the 1st of May
He was invited by the director
To add to the celebrations
His stories and memories
That day Avdija
Took his plaques and awards
In a decorated classroom
And took the place of honor
Before he went out in front of the kids
He drank like a madman
Like a poet who didn't believe
