The mountain ounce's kingdom
They rule high in their alpine realm
A world sparse and unforgiving
Reigned over by large snowshoe paws
With a thick luxurious coat and tail
Winter slopes give way
From its hardships survived
Those green eyes and grey coat
A furry tail to cover face asleep
Twilight hunter, out and about
Not often seen, nor even heard
We have met close up in brief
Both respectful of existence, of space
Hunters sharing the same terrain
We each slip away in silent stealth
