老人と海 [Rōjin to umi] [English translation]

My shoelaces are undone, the sunbeams filter through the trees,

The sound of my breath is the only thing that I hear.

You stand up from that creaky old chair.

The gentle smell of flax1 tickles my nose.

Into the horizon, and the great beyond,

We take off and leave our bodies behind,

Even further, to a place higher than the clouds,

We ride the wind to places that defy even our imagination,

Flying ever

further away,

Ever toward the sea.

My shoelaces are undone, like snakes they bound around and play,

I wonder if your shoes are undone too.2

The sea breeze licks our skin, as we walk along

the path your hands lead me down.

Into the horizon, and the great beyond,

We become the wind and fly,

Even further, to a place higher than the clouds,

We ride the wind, slipping from the shackles of our imagination,

Flying ever further away,

Ever toward the sea.

My shoelaces are undone, and I finally bend down to tie them up,

The chirping of birds is the only thing that I hear.

You pat my shoulder,

and as I lift my head the sea comes into view.

Into the horizon, and the great beyond,

We leave our bodies and become spirits,

Even further, to a place higher than the clouds,

We ride the wind to places that defy even our imagination,

Flying ever further away,

Ever toward the sea.

We take off our shoes, and the ripples tickle our feet,

Your eyes look into the distance,

On this African beach, we lions play,

The sea reaching out into the great beyond.

1. flax; hemp; cannabis; take your pick. I was loath to pick "cannabis" or "weed" as the translation because the smell of that stuff is not gentle at all. 2. This literally means "I am interested / worried about your shoes", but I am pretty sure this is the correct interpretation.
