She was born in the Paris of 1790
Like a rose in bloom
In the garden of lily flowers.
Marianne has five children
That she raises as best she can
Marianne now has
A few wrinkles in the corners of her eyes.
Lord! But Marianne was so pretty
When she used to walk in the streets of Paris
Whilst singing out loudly:
Everything will be fine, Everything will be fine... for life.
Lord! But Marianne was so pretty
When she used to set the heart of Paris alight
By shouting from the rooftops:
Everything will be fine! Everything will be fine! For life.
Not so long ago
We were fighting for her
And I've known springtimes
That used to sparkle under her sunshine.
Marianne has five children,
Four sons whom she has lost
The fifth nowadays
Whom she no longer recognises.
