When the last ray of sunlight
Goes weary behind Marjan1
Through the Cross street downtown
The lamplighter goes to the boardwalk
He carries ladders on his back
So he can light the lanterns
Old yellow shoes clack
That once shined for the dance
Easy, in a soft voice
He sings about a man from an island
He finished his work
Boardwalk shined
It lit up all of it
In a thousand colors
Like the youth that passed
And old age is in a hurry
He goes home content
Drags one leg after the other
His old bones squeak painfully
Because it's a long way home.
