I saw a butterfly in the autumn night
When I was walking home
So beautiful, small, white
It was still alive
Like a summer's fairy
Had come to fall's greyness
Fluttering so very quietly
It stayed in the shade of the trees
Do you know it, butterfly,
That it's winter soon
And frost will wrap the regions
In the cold net of ice
You didn't settle for dying
With the masses
But you wanted to see the land of winter
So purely white
You wanted to leave this place
Only with freezing wings
When the last wingstroke, trembling,
Hits the gates of cold
Once again in an autumn night
Those fallen off leaves rot
And all of the summer's swallows
Have left from here
Only the butterfly flies alone
It can sometimes be seen
It brought the last breath of summer
To the small park's shadow
Do you know it, butterfly,
That it's winter soon
And frost will wrap the regions
In the cold net of ice
You didn't settle for dying
With the masses
But you wanted to see the land of winter
So purely white
You wanted to leave this place
Only with freezing wings
When the last wingstroke, trembling,
Hits the gates of cold
