The water streams tremble,
the river hillocks make noise [”kurmuttavat” seems to be a made up word]
The stark rapids do not have mercy,
stark rapids, treacherous waterfall
Strikes on the neck, gnaws the leg,
rushes down to the back, kicks in the head
I yell, scream, curse
I cry, whine, perkele!
The battle is fierce, the wrestling wild,
full of crushing blows
The log underneath is solid,
hard is the trunk over the rapids
A lot of water, a lot of stream
how much longer will I endure?
The river will not yield,
and neither will I!
There are plenty of rocks in the rapids
-a lot of logs to take
There are plenty of rocks in the rapids
-a long way to go
There are plenty of rocks in the rapids
-my home village is awaiting me already
There are plenty of rocks in the rapids
-I am pining after my old lady already
I can barely stand,
to converse with the pike pole
Take wood, bring wood,
trade them for squirrel skin
Strikes on the neck, gnaws the leg
Rushes down to the back, kicks in the head
I yell, scream, curse
I cry, whine, perkele!
