Sword in my hand, fire in my eyes
Never shall I renege on my tribe
My people live in freedom, untamed by the emperor’s hand
Faithful to the Gods, faithful to the fatherland
The dark woods are my halls
Moors and meadows my domain
Impenetrable, unimpaired
The wild grounds along the Rhine
Between woods and rivers
Ruling in wilderness
Invincible, undaunted
Istvaeones at the Rhine
And before nobody shall I kneel
I shall not bow my head
As long as blood runs through my veins
And the fire burns in my heart
My freedom remains unrestrained1
Peoples at the Rhine, united with the empire
Opressed and gone astray under foreign rule
No emperor shall step on my land
No envoy of the empire on my territory
No alliance shall steal from my tribe
The freedom my people enjoys
And before no-one shall I kneel
I shall not bow my head
As long as blood runs through my veins
And the fire burns in my heart
My freedom remains unrestrained
As long as water is flowing down the streams
And the green of the woods is crowning my land
I shall not kneel on my fathers’ ground, but fight
The inconsiderate emperor who offered the world to me,
Freedom, wealth, and clout
Felt my wrath when I spilled his blood,
(and) Brought an end to his lies
For my angry heart doesn’t kneel before anybody
Doesn’t pledge allegiance to the empire
And before no-one shall I kneel
I shall not bow my head
As long as blood runs through my veins
And the fire burns in my heart
My freedom remains unrestrained
As long as water is flowing down the streams
And the green of the woods is crowning my land
I shall not kneel on my fathers’ ground
But fight for freedom where my life began
1. During the reign of the Roman emperors there were several attempts to invade and conquer Germania. But the vast woodlands and the tribal structure of the Germanic people obstructed the march of the well-organized Roman legions. Every inch of land was paid for with vast amounts of Roman blood. The Romans switched tactics and started using diplomacy and forceful persuasion. Some tribes fell for the deceitful promises of wealth and power. But there were those who resisted and swore to never kneel for the Roman oppressors. „As long as blood runs through my veins and the fire burns in my heart. My freedom remains unrestrained“
