It’s strangely silent in the street today
as if it were Sunday, yet again.
A man’s out singing on his balcony ‘cross the way
while the woman next door plays her violin.
We said what we could to reassure the kids:
What an adventure this could be!
We stuck their drawings on the fridge
and turned off the TV.
Let’s just pretend
that this is some kind of game.
Let’s just pretend
And do as best we can.
When day’s ‘bout to end
and we close our eyes
Let’s just pretend
We’re living ‘neath blue skies.
Let’s just pretend
That we’re not really here,
Parents, friends,
we’ll soon be near!
And even though
the start of Spring we may miss
in my heart I know
ahead are days of bliss.
Despite all our fear
Laughter still rings out
Being apart somehow draws us near
Though aside from the weather
we don’t say much:
Just be sure to stay in touch.
