That house again, that same house again.
It knows me as well as I know it,
It thinks I'm an eccentric:
"Coming here again
to stand around
all night without sleep,
waiting..."
Under the cover of darkness
I look up there, where you are -
There's no height higher than that;
The yards are empty,
The drawbridges are down again,1
And me and the street cats
are on the first name basis now.
My love on the 5th floor,
almost where the moon is.
My love is surely asleep now -
sweet dreams!
My love on the 5th floor...
The house is wrapped in silence
And only the rain above my head
Will ask me if it's time for me to return home.
I don't care about the rain and the darkness,
But I'd like to understand
Why am I here and what for.
The yards are empty,
The drawbridges are down again,
And me and the street cats
are on the first name basis now.
My love on the 5th floor,
almost where the moon is.
My love is surely asleep now -
sweet dreams!
My love on the 5th floor...
The clock shows it's past 3am,2
The moon lantern is switched off
And it's time for me to raise anchor.
The day will not be enough for me again
But soon the city will be in lights
And the midnight will save me again.
I'll come again
To stand here
Sleepless all night
And wait in silence.
My love on the 5th floor,
almost where the moon is.
My love is surely asleep now -
sweet dreams!
My love on the 5th floor...
...
1. In St.Petersburg the drawbridges over Neva are drawn at night to pass the ships to/from the sea. When the bridges were up you couldn't get from some parts of the city into other parts. (At the time the song was written; this is no longer true).2. See previous footnote. The bridges were lowered between 3am and 4am.
