Years ago to do work manual
Required free time to rest
But it was then important
To keep a keen edge too
A dull edge is a tearing one
And a sharp one that cuts
So rest is then work honing
Maintaining a whetted gleam
Filing or stoning a blade
Out of the bluntness of toil
Keeping a task's mastery
Its senses disciplined so
Whether it be a farm scythe
Or a resident rotary mower
The ditch digger's shovel
Or the lumberjack's axe
The time afforded precision
Brings ease in earned efforts
And pride in those rewards
With rugged hands grimly given
