Lolek [English translation]

Since the middle ages, since (the lifetime of) Jan Długosz

there is a written tradition in small Polish towns

that in the Piekarska (Baker) street live the bakers,

in the Szewska (shoemaker) street live the shoemakers, and in the Szklana (glass) street live the glaciers.

In the Złota (Gold) street lives the goldsmith, in the Chmielna (hobs) street lives the brewer,

but he was born in the Kościelna (church) street.

What is going to happen, that will happen anyway

and it is not our (right) to judge

let him be like you imagined him, o Lord

now lead Lolek through his life!

Since the middle ages, since (the lifetime of) Jan Długosz

there is a written tradition in Polish families,

that a baker's son became a baker, a shoemaker's son a shoemaker, a glacier's son a glacier.

But no one ever heard of, what I deeply believe in,

that a soldier's son became Pope.

What is going to happen, that will happen anyway

and it is not our (right) to judge

let him be like you imagined him, o Lord

now lead Lolek through his life!

Since the middle ages, since (the lifetime of) Jan Długosz

there is a written tradition in the Polish nation,

that honour, sincerity, love of family

were passed from the father to the son

Those were simple matters in life

Like the fact that they went to play football at the Skawa (river)

What is going to happen, that will happen anyway

and it is not our (right) to judge

let him be like you imagined him, o Lord

now lead Lolek through his life!
