Listen to the song of the little soldier,
who through an œil de bœuf
sees some swifts flying!
He is not an expert on that, the little soldier,
but the fact that swifts are flying
must mean that the land is close.
It is so close that the captain comes down
he tries not to look nervous
while he finishes the commands:
"Concentrate, little soldiers, be careful,
and cling to your life
tooth and nail"
In the deck, men pray
In the deck, men pray
He says amen, little convinced, the little soldier
and he caresses his rifle,
trying not to think in anything.
From the bow the hills look bigger and bigger
"little soldier, courage, courage,
the fate of the world depends on people like you"
But "what if an enemies' bullet crosses the wind
and goes through my brain"
thinks the little soldier,
"waves will drag me
and one thousand coloured fishes
will fight to devour my flesh".
Then he thinks "I'll hide;
when nobody can see me I'll hide"
But they're always looking, and the ship is slowing down,
the doors have been opened
and in one second, the sea gets inundated
with soldiers shooting to the horizon
with a little soldier in the middle of them,
shooting while insulting the enemy.
And between bomb and bomb everything goes pretty good
until one of them falls next to him
At first he thinks "How lucky! it was so close...",
but then he feels a strange pain in his back
and when he touches it his whole arm gets stained with blood.
He turns his head one way and the other
He sits in the sand and rests.
And while waiting the fucking doctor, the little soldier
reassures himself repeating
what he will do, where he will go, if he survives:
"I'll go to my mother's place nicely dressed
and first of all, I'll have to ask her
to forgive me to treat her always that way;
I'll go to Margarida to have a son
so that when I see him I realise
that I love him more than I love myself"
