In recent times it seems to be modern again
I can't listen to it all any more
Always that same old nonsense
Blood and Soil, People and Race
Being "pure-blooded" is worth something again
Are we supposed to be dogs, or am I a horse?
But before I come and tell you what's what
Allow me to introduce myself...
My great-grandfather was an Alpine farmboy
Yodelling in his Lederhosen, as German as you like
His wife a little girl from some little nest
Between Balaton1 and Budapest
The other was a traveller, so the people said
A fisherman - great-grandma didn't really ask
And I look into the mirror and I look at myself
And then I say, "Hey everyone, there's something about this"
I've got a headscarf, a Kippa2, a Styrian hat
And you'll never drag me away from where the wild streams rush
I love my Hammelbraten3 and I love my Kaiserschmarr'n4
And I'd be quite lost without my Tamburica5 music
I'm from India, I'm from Palestine
From the Wachau6, Ramsau7, even Africa and China
From here and there, from there and here
I have the honour that in my blood this all takes place
I'm a fine mixture, a special blend
You know what they call people like me?
I'm the wild sort, the brown go pale
I am from Austria
When I hear Carinthian songs, the feelings come on me
And the Slovene in me sings right along
And brings me and the whole world to tears
If I hear a tuba in the street
I'm a Bohemian Jew, a Gypsy from Vienna
I'm a milkmaid, a janitor, a Muezzin,
I'm a young Roman, and old Croat
If I didn't exist, it'd be a real shame
I'm a fine mixture, a special blend
You know what they call people like me?
I'm the wild sort, the brown go pale
I am from Austria
One is called Drago, is blond and looks at the world with blue eyes
The other's called Gert and looks exactly the same
As you would imagine a Drago to look8
Some are Aryan, others are fools
Some are both at once
Everything gets mixed up, like this and like that
Here in Austria
I'm a fine mixture, a special blend
You know what they call people like me?
I'm the wild sort, the brown go pale
I am from Austria
