Listen, Elphie, now that we're friends, I'm gonna make you my new project.
That's really not necessary.
I know. That's exactly what's nice about me!
If someone isn't as
Blessed by fortune as I --
And after all, there's really no one
Who's as blessed by fortune as I --
My heart immediately softens
With sorrow, and cries.
And if someone is embarrassed,
I seize the opportunity
To help, even when it hardly seems possible.
Now, your problem is,
Considered quite objectively, most extreme,
But I already know how I can solve it.
Team up with me
Cooperate and then
You'll soon be ...
Beloved!
Yes you'll soon be beloved!
I'll show you the come-on trick
And the smiling glance.
Little tips for flirting and flair.
I'll show you the most chic shoes
And the matching dress.
When you have that and a lot more...
You'll be beloved ...
Even you will soon be beloved
You'll go around with a clique,
You'll be an ace at sports,
You'll be cool and hip --
But admittedly
That's going to take a miracle for you.
Don't be hurt by my honesty.
Just consider me an expert in being desired.
Just admit to yourself that I'm indispensable.
Without experience
In the art of pairing-up,
One just seldom becomes beloved
And if you don't know that, you throw away
The chance to be a prize.
Being really "in"
Can only be learned with a lot of ... practice.
But if you're really hardworking,
Then even you will become
Beloved ... [-]1
La la la la
Cooperate and you'll become beloved.
To the angels deserving of mourning,
[Those] with regrettable flaws,
I shout: "Just think about it a bit
And ask yourselves -
The famed heads of state,
All the stars and hat-wavers -
Were they really great thinkers?
Don't make me laugh!"
They were beloved. Look,
Full of faults, but beloved.
Not much is needed --
Just how people view you.
He who knows that will surely become
Popular and beloved
Like me.
Why, Elphaba, you're a beauty! Look!
I - I have to go -
You're welcome!
Even if you say "no" now,
Let me predict to you
That your heart will buzz with joy
When your "being-deeply-sad"
Becomes "being-beloved".
La la la la
You'll become beloved.
Just not quite so beloved
As I!
1. The German translator did a good job of translating the rhyming joke from English. The word "heißgeliebt" (beloved), standing in for the English word "popular", is twisted to the nonsense-word "heißgelübt" in order to force a rhyme with the word "übt" (practice) a few lines earlier. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to translate the joke back into English from German!
