You, sea! who carries the weight of the times and the sorrows,
you cause me mental distress,
in the innermost part of my heart, you crash on the cliffs,
it starts to echo.
Your ripple is sad, your sound is bitter,
you intimidate the mind so,
as if each drop of surf were a bitter tear,
each sound of a wave were a sigh.
And dark was the ocean and dark, under the hail,
was the thunderous cliffside,
and then the darkness of night fell, silent like death
and heavy like grief.
By the sea I sat on a sea rock ledge
and saw into the gloom,
where the great heavy wave surged by the shore
and sighed so heavily.
