[According to the narrative by Stefan Zweig]
18 January 1912. Captain Scott ---accompanied by Evans,
Wilson, Bowers, and Oates--reaches the South Pole.
However, he fails in accomplishing the exploit of being first
to step on latitude point 0. Explorer Amundsen's Norwegian flag now waves in place.
Exhausted and unsuccessful, they begin the journey back home.
16 February. The South Pole.
Five Englishmen pass through the Blue Desert.
Evans is last in line,
and Death clutches him by his rucksack,
with the full intention of proving
that once dead,
being in that place isn't so bad.
If there was any conversation, there wasn't any gravestone.
God save the Queen,
eternal glory be to the heroes
of Antarctica.
6 March, and Oates can't bear it anymore.
His two feet feel like two blades of crystal, as
he goes crawling through certain stretches of ice.
His hands are icy as well,
but nobody wants to abandon him.
And while they sleep,
he departs to eternity.
If there was any conversation, there wasn't any gravestone.
God save the Queen,
eternal glory be to the heroes
of Antarctica.
30 March. This is the end of the diary by
Bowers, Wilson, and Scott.
May all the aid that never reached us
go to those who remain,
our children, our widows.
As one Englishman dies, three die.
There were no gravestones
There were no conversations
There was no God
There was no Queen, either
Just eternal snows
in Antarctica.
