It was on the narrow street of Palha
where my lover, a despicable man,

and came swaggering, conceited,
with a touch of provocation.
In a tavern called Friagem
among many fados1
I confronted them without spite.
Because the woman he had with him
certainly wasn't even worth
a shadow of my love.
To see which of us had more zeal
we sang as a challenge,
me and that nobody.
I made her look like a fool
proving myself the better fadista2
proving to be more of a woman.
It was one of many scenes
among others that I've lived in my life
that cannot be forgotten.
All I know is that in the morning
when it was all said and done,
the two of us went home together
