Erin’s Green Shore lyrics

One evening of late as I rambled

on the banks of a clear purling stream.

I sat down by a bed of primroses

and I quickly fell into a dream.

I dreamed I had a sweet fair maiden

whose equal I’d never seen before.

She said for the wrongs of her country,

she had strayed along Erin’s green shore.

I went to her and quickly addressed her,

“Fair maid, will you tell me your name?

And why through this wild-wooded country

From England through London you came?”

“I am a daughter of William O’Connell;

From England I ’ve lately come o’er.

I ’ve come to awaken my brothers

who slumber on Erin’s green shore.”

Her cheeks were like two blooming roses

and her teeth were like ivory so bright.

Her eyes were like two sparkling diamonds

Or the stars of a clear frosty night.

She resembled the riches of Eden

and green was the mantle she wore.

She said for the wrongs of her country,

she had strayed along Erin’s green shore.
