I calculated the winds, figured out rains
Hunched pressures, measured temperatures,
Checked sunrises from the newspapers
Began to try to etch stones
Trees don't yet shed, puddles don't yet freeze
Late at night I study silent books
What great things were done, others didn't see
What secretly was collected, wasn't so clear
When a despairing wind rises and turns south
Wait and stay though nothing is heard
Know what comes that is written
Keep tables set and doors open
For my guests who never come
Who never come
I spread maps to my room
Check compass headings and memorize star charts
Seek the right stones, in their ring I sleep
Record my dreams, fight my delusions
Practice silent walking, hiding in the woods
Until all is clear, when I understand the pattern
