The sun is burning my back
my feet are getting all wet by the water
but I'm stuck looking for something,
to find the perfect seashell
And I hear her soft voice
telling me not to go far
telling me to stay close so she can see me
telling me to not go into the deep
But I pretend I can't hear her
I have a necklace to get done
and as soon as I find that one seashell
I'll tie it and give it to her
And look at how the years went by
but I still haven't found the perfect seashell
and I have an unfinished gift that's getting all dusty
in a drawer as if for dowry
And if I knew that the sand I was standing on
was the bottom of this hourglass
that was running merciless
maybe I would have chosen different seashells
And now, if I had the power
to decorate this necklace with words
perhaps I'd choose the simpliest ones
the ones that come to mind first
"I love you and I miss you"
and that's enough, don't you think?
and that was the first seashell on the shore
but I thought you deserved a better one
And now I've grown up and when I look up
you're decorating the night
and you've gone out to pick out stars
to fill up a different necklace
And I've tied this necklace up
and wrapped it tightly around my hands
and when we see each other again I'll give it to you
to complete it with stars
