Das Mädchen und der Tod [English translation]

Once lived in a far away country

A sickly girl, called Madleen

And however weakly her heart was beating

So much more courage to live she had

One night from the front door

A stranger knocks, the house was otherwise empty

Come inside to her sickbed

His face concealed in shadow

"Look at me my child

Before the day begins

Your hardship will end

Look at me my child

I relieve you"

So spoke death to her that night.

Sweet sounded the voice of the stranger

She almost falls for its appeal

Until the moonlight breakes through the window

And shines into his face

As death gets startled by the light

Quickly she looks away

And keeps away from the stranger's flattering

His magic cannot entice her

"Look at me my child

Before the day begins

Your hardship will end

Look at me my child

I relieve you"

So spoke death to her that night.

Once lived in a far away country

A sickly girl, called Madleen

Lived long and unafraid

Till she invited the stranger

"Look at at me and

go ahead, my friend

I've lived long anough on earth

Look at at me and

take me upwards, my friend"

So the girl went with death
