I was a charcoal burner

but envy corrupted my sense of honour

I wished only for fame and fortune

Whatever the price

And so I fell victim

to the demon of Tannenreich

He ripped out my beating heart

and put it in a jar

He gave me a heart of stone

and I soon forgot my fear

Life with a cold heart

Gave me everything, took so much

I became rich and famous

But I lost the game

When screaming silence reaches out

When only a heartbeat can be heard

No noise comes from my breast

There is no sound to trouble me

Dreams turned to stone

Turned to cold stone

My tears, turned to stone

My feelings, turned to stone

No joy to enliven me

I know no smiles or jokes

I have become dead stone,

Like my cold heart

Many years later,

I wanted to see my heart once again

And in the demon's hut

I saw a hundred jars

I said: Master, those are not hearts

They are only made of wax

You never took away my heart

It was only in my mind!

Reunited with my real heart

I took to my heels

I ran as far as the road would take me

Until I found peace again
