All the lovers of the world stand up straight like an "i"
Fallen from the ladder, disguised as an "l", fallen from the nest
They freeze up the second they tell each other yes
All along the waves,
Far from the edge, we baptise love on display
The service and the plunge
Take my bruises
And I'll forget all about it, the witness and the bar1
It's lively on the paths, the alcoves
It's lively, it's moving, it's moving, it's moving
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played to win
And every time someone else will take your place
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played, you played
It's on the ropes that we reveal ourselves, that we show our true colours
The eyes of the Mona Lisa embrace me
The places I go, everywhere I end up
Everywhere I tow along my blues and my pain
When fashion2 comes to butcher everything in its path
But you can see me melt on the spot when the day faints
From the body and face of Claudia Cardinale3
I'll throw in the towel, the ropes and the weapons
And all the dark things
It's lively on the paths, the alcoves
It's lively, it's moving, it's moving, it's moving
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played to win
And every time someone else will take your place
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played, you played
It's on the ropes that we reveal ourselves, that we show our true colours
It's lively on the paths, the alcoves
It's lively, it's moving, it's moving, it's moving
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played to win
And every time someone else will take your place
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played, you played
It's on the ropes that we reveal ourselves, that we show our true colours
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played to win
And every time someone else will take your place
You fought hard, but
You give, you give, you give and don't stop
You played, you played
It's on the ropes that we reveal ourselves, that we show our true colours
1. I mostly wasn't sure how to translate "barre" in this context - there were about a dozen different possibilities, many of which could have fit with the song. Since it also mentions "témoin" (witness) I'm partial to translating it as "bar" (as in, a witness stand).2. I'm really not sure what 'la mode' is supposed to mean in this context3. a Tunisian-born Italian film actress who starred in some of the most acclaimed European films of the 1960s and 1970s, mainly Italian or French, but also in many English-language films.
