Staring into the brilliant embers
Only an occasional flicker of flame
The intensity of orange and pink
And white and black define depth
The night is dense black infinite
Only the glowing of coals break it
An island of light, and a silhouette
Solitary staring into space afire
A world so close, yet so very distant
Waves of light ripple in the heat
Only occasional wisps of smoke go
And find their way upon the breeze
Cracks break the silence prevailing
Embers that escape the glowing heap
Their ventures short, a grey demise
Such pure beauty is brief, burning
A camp fire defines a presence
That man is near in tenuous control
A force that is close kept and feared
Its warmth felt true, but n'er caressed
The greyed ashen heap that stays
Seems to betray the wonder living
When its time of brilliance is done
Darkness descends, and cinders die
