Said God in a corner of the sky
I’d started a story
On a new planet, all blue
Blue, to make it stand out
I’m going to go and sit on the edge of the world
To see what the men have made of it
I put a few short-lived people there
I’d mixed up the colours
I’d taught them how to share
They recited it by heart

A mound of flowers for every girl
Then I planted apple trees
Where everyone ate heartily
And everywhere, everywhere deep rivers

Suddenly the whole city stops
It seems that the rivers have swollen
The children gather together, and worry
And ask “Why all these noises?”
It must be God and his white beard
God who’s sitting on the edge of the world
And who’s crying seeing it as it is!
