I wish I could see Syracuse

Easter Island and Kairouan

and the great birds which playfully

glide on a wing against the wind,

to see the Babylon gardens,

the palace of the Great Lama,

to muse about Verone's lovers1

atop Fuji Yama mountain,

to see the land of morning calm2,

to go cormorant fishing

and get drunk on palm wine

listening to the singing wind.

Still, before my youth is worn out,

and before my springtimes are gone

I wish I could see Syracuse

to remember it in Paris.
