A shadow runs along the walls tonight
It's cold and silent
You've seen it in the corner of your eye before
as you walked those empty steps
You've seen it pass
and make the night so peculiar
You know that reality
isn't always that real
I saw a man laying on a bench and die one night
there wasn't much to do
His friend said: Jesus will take care of you now
but he could neither see nor hear
The moon shone in the fjorde
The purest water of the Nordic countries
A blanket was laid over the body
then we slowly went homewards in the night
Have you walked those empty steps
along the channels of anxiety
Have you thrown a few rocks out into the abyss
and seen them tumbling down in spirals
It's locked by the gate
to the desolate shore
There's a guard by the gate
he's out for blood
I know someone who's seen more than most
someone who's never seen what he's got here
He says he's been in Hell and turned
I think a part of him was left there
now he's outside of this world
Seen through and bitter
he walks those empty steps
beneath the birds' cheerful twittering
They found a body down by the water today
it must have laid there all night
A bullet hole right through the chest
the lungs filled with water
Did someone silence the roar
Was it worth the trouble
you feel the guilt and shame
even though you never held the rifle
I believe in the pigeon who knows where it's going
I believe in goodness and improvement
I am a boat of bark
Which drifts between branches and rocks
and a moth is my crew
No guards by the gate
No locks on the gate
Only the voice calling
in the eternally whispering wind
