A huge part of what made the original version of The Office such a resounding success was the underlying sense of sadness that surrounded manager David Brent, played by Ricky Gervais. While the budding romance between Tim and Dawn in The Office was the centerpiece of the show, followed closely by the interactions between Martin Freeman’s Tim and Mackenzie Crook’s Gareth, the driving force of the show was Ricky Gervais as the petulant man child that was David Brent. Thankfully, for fans of the original series of The Office there will be a brief reprieve into the life and times of David Brent in the upcoming film, David Brent: Life on the Road.
In a recent appearance on the Graham Norton Show, Gervais appeared to talk about the upcoming film, as well as just how far he was willing to go to really convey the inner sadness of the character David Brent. That includes Ricky Gervais recording an entire accompanying album of 15 – 20 songs for Life on the Road. Ricky Gervais is a name that seems to always grab headlines, sometimes with touching eulogies to fallen heroes like David Bowie and other times for his often controversial comments. In a way, that is what makes the upcoming Life on the Road that much more exciting; David Brent feels like an extension of Ricky Gervais.
During this snippet of an interview Gervais talks about the deep, inner sadness of a man still chasing his dreams to no avail while talking about his own “failed” career as a musician. Later on, while Kevin Costner was talking about his experience with directing wolves, Ricky Gervais explained to Costner about the importance of rubbing their bellies. Why does he know this Because ladies and gentlemen, Ricky Gervais has indeed run with wolves.
