Thanks to Deadpool‘s record-breaking, game-changing success at the box office this year, you’d have to imagine that writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have pretty much their pick of the litter when it comes to choosing projects right about now. Aside from the high-priority Deadpool sequel that currently has every grizzled tough guy actor in Hollywood (and Kyle Chandler) campaigning for a role in it, the writing duo will also be re-teaming with Ryan Reynolds for the sci-fi thriller Life scheduled for a May release next year.
Having now tackled comic book movies, thrillers set in space, and even reality competition shows (the Joe Schmo Show, anyone), it would appear that Wernick and Reese are big fans of putting an inventive spin on a vastly overdone genre. So when taking a look around at today’s film and television viewing trends, it would only make sense that they’d return to one of the most played-out genres imaginable next: zombies!
Appearing on the latest episode of Kevin Smith and Greg Grunberg’s new AMC show, Geeking Out, Wernick and Rheese officially announced that they would be lending their talents to the upcoming, totally-actually-happening Zombieland sequel, which the pair had signed onto as executive producers at the beginning of the year.
“That is breaking news that we’re on Zombieland 2 right now,” said the duo. “We’re sitting with Woody [Harrelson] tomorrow and are going to sort of walk him through some of the stuff we want to do. All the cast is pretty excited.”
Wernick and Reese were, of course, the writing team that helped make 2009’s Zombieland such a huge success,. Even so, the sudden renewed interest in Zombieland 2 is certainly surprising considering how the doomed Amazon spin-off series was received by fans. With the entire original cast back (if Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, and Jesse Eisenberg are as enthused about a sequel as they’ve stated) and the juvenile sensibilities of Reese and Wernick behind it, however, it’s hard to see Zombieland 2 being anything other than a resounding success. Because the first Zombieland was pretty good, and the only logical next step is to sequelize it until nobody likes it anymore. Maybe we can get Andrew Lincoln in there for a winking cameo! Yay!
