Carrie Fisher’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Role May Expand As Additional Photography Begins

Back in June, Star Wars: Episode VIII officially wrapped filming (and had a stormtrooper dance party to celebrate), but apparently there was still some work left to do. It seems as though additional photography has begun on Rian Johnson’s film, and may continue for at least the next couple weeks.

Our first evidence that Star Wars: Episode VIII is picking up additional footage comes from Lupita Nyong’o, who let slip last week that she hadn’t yet filmed any scenes as Maz Kanata. Well, that’s since changed. Nyong’o was a guest on Ellen yesterday, and revealed all her Episode VIII scenes have now been filmed. So, we know at least some level of additional photography is now under way.

Well, Nyong’o likely isn’t only one doing some makeup filming. Fans recently picked up on this Instagram from New York Comic Con…

The post apologizes that Carrie Fisher will only be on one hand for one day, as she’ll be busy with Star Wars: Episode VIII production. The convention runs from Oct. 6 to Oct. 9, which could be evidence that Episode VIII additional photography will continue for the next couple weeks into early October. The fact that Fisher was originally booked for NYCC, but had to pull out could also indicate that Leia’s role in Episode VIII may have changed/expanded somewhat.

Oh, and in case all this shooting talk is making you nervous, this isn’t the same situation as the reshoots that struck Rogue One earlier this year. Reshoots are meant to fix issues found during the editing process, while additional photography is usually just the filmmakers picking up some extra scenes they couldn’t shoot previously due to scheduling issues. Additional photography is a normal part of the process, although it can be used to tweak a movie’s direction to a degree.

Star Wars: Episode VIII blasts into theaters December 15, 2017.
