Suicide Squad, a “cinematic Hoobastank song,” beat A Man Called Ove and Star Trek Beyond to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling. No knock on Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Nelson, who certainly gave Harley Quinn and Joker distinctive looks, but Hot Topic: The Movie — which has a 26% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes — taking home an Academy Award is, let’s say, unexpected, especially when compared to all the great films, actors, actresses, and directors who never accomplished the same feat.

This also means Suicide Squad has more Oscars than every Marvel movie, combined, and it’s one of the first times in the history of the Academy Awards that a director has apologized for his award-winning film. “Wish I had a time machine,” David Ayer said. “I’d make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story. I have to take the good and bad and learn from it… I have to give the characters the stories and plots they deserve next time. Real talk. (And no, there isn’t a secret edit of the film with a bunch of Joker scenes hidden in a salt mine somewhere.)” At least Jared Leto, the Edgelord himself, has more gold to add to his collection.
