Taran Killam Confirms Your Suspicions About What Donald Trump Hosting ‘SNL’ Was Like Behind The Scenes

SNL made a huge mistake inviting the show’s number-one fan Donald Trump to host the November 7, 2015 episode, but the fallout was short-lived. Ratings for the sketch series are at a 20-year high, and the Boss Baby himself, Alec Baldwin, got a book deal for impersonating the president. But before Baldwin unofficially joined SNL and almost sprained his jaw in the process, former-cast member Taran Killam was tasked with parodying Trump. Surprisingly, the president was a fan — “@TaranKillam plays a way better fake @realDonaldTrump than a real @HillarlyClinton plays herself,” he tweeted.

Trump might have a different opinion about Killam now.

Not only did he join the cast of Hamilton (which was “very rude” of him), but in an interview with Brooklyn Magazine, the Why We’re Killing Gunther writer and director confirmed everything you assumed about Trump’s stint on SNL.

“It was not fun,” Killam said, “and most of the cast and writers were not excited to have him there. I didn’t get the feeling that he was excited to be there, and it felt like a move for ratings from both sides. He was… everything you see. What you see is what you get with him, really. I mean, there was no big reveal. He struggled to read at the table read, which did not give many of us great confidence. Didn’t get the jokes, really. He’s just a man who seems to be powered by bluster.”

I guess it’s true what they say: success goes to your head when you own a successful chicken restaurant in New Jersey.
