Weekend Preview: ‘The Leftovers’ Departs And ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Returns

The Leftovers (HBO, Sunday 9:00 p.m.) – We’ve come to the end of the road as The Leftovers airs its series finale on Sunday night. For three years we’ve watched this group of characters try to make sense of our own humanity: life, love, death, religion, science fiction, they’ve all been at the center of the big question the show’s been asking. Whether we’ll get a satisfying answer is ultimately up to Damon Lindelof but if we don’t get a happy ending, at least we can all say we’ve enjoyed the journey.

Fear the Walking Dead (AMC, Sunday 9:00 p.m.) – Season three begins with Strand battling for control over his domain as the Clark family must work together to find a safe place.

The Originals (CW, Friday 8:00 p.m.) – Klaus calls Rebekah and Kol back to the fold to help the family fight the Hollow while Freya recruits Hayley for a dangerous mission and Marcel faces an enemy he isn’t prepared for.

Reign (CW, Friday 9:00 p.m.) – Elizabeth is thrown for a loop when she suffers a major setback and Mary gets revenge on those who conspired against her.

The 76th Annual Peabody Awards (PBS, Friday 9:00 p.m.) — Rashida Jones hosts the annual event, which honors powerful, enlightening and invigorating stories in TV, radio and digital media, something we desperately need right now.

20/20: In an Instant (ABC, Saturday 9:00 p.m.) – Season three kicks off with a family getting stuck in a blizzard while on their way to a funeral and being forced to embark on a three-day, 20-mile trek through the wilderness.

Doctor Who (BBC, Saturday 9:00 p.m.) – It’s up to Bill and Nardole to rescue the Doctor from a sticky situation.

The Son (AMC, Saturday 9:00 p.m.) — Young Eli is forced to trust a strange ally to survive in 1849. In 1915, Eli’s past guides him to a choice that puts him at odds with Phineas.

Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly (NBC, Sunday 7:00 p.m.) – Megyn Kelly’s new show debuts on NBC and, apparently, she’s kicking things off with a little chat with Vladimir Putin.

American Ninja Warrior: USA vs. the World (NBC, Sunday 8:00 p.m.) — Top Ninjas from around the world gather to compete in the annual “USA vs. The World” showdown. Here’s hoping the Red, White and Blue do well. We could use a win.

The White Princess (Starz, Sunday 8:00 p.m.) – Lizzie’s plan to help the pretender escape backfires and she’s forced to face old family curses in order to protect her family and Henry’s throne.

American Gods (Starz, Sunday 9:00 p.m.) — Vulcan, God of the Fire and the Forge, show up to help Shadow and Mr. Wednesday out of a jam after the New Gods show off their growing power.

Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime, Sunday 9:00 p.m.) – “Case files.” That’s all Showtime gives us for this episode description which is unsurprising at this point. Since no one ever knows what the hell is going on with this show, let’s not try to theorize what this episode might be about and instead hope that Cooper regains some semblance of a brain.

Silicon Valley (HBO, Sunday 10:15 p.m.) — Richard decides to stand up to a patent troll, but his defiance comes back to haunt him. Gilfoyle goes to extremes to battle Jian-Yang’s new smart fridge.

Veep (HBO, Sunday 10:45 p.m.) – Selena must find new backers for her presidential library or risk losing all of the money she’s already raised.
