We haven’t heard much about The Predator since the motion poster was released, but we do know it’s being directed and co-written by Shane Black, who is an awesome choice and was, amusingly, a short-lived character in the original 1987 Predator. We also know it stars Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Jane, Jake Busey, Edward James Olmos, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, Yvonne Strahovski, and Jacob Tremblay. And now we know more about the plot, thanks to an interview with one of the cast members.
Pop Culture interviewed Jake Busey, who is both the son of Gary Busey and reveals he’s playing the son of the character his father played in Predator 2. The younger Busey also revealed the new movie explores why Predators visited Earth in the first place.
“This one definitely falls in line with the original franchise in that it does focus on the technology that the Predators have. It focuses on what the goal of the Predators is, and what their modus operandi, and why they come to the planet, and that type of thing. It’s definitely in line with the original franchise.”
He also said the film takes place between 1990’s Predator 2 (set in 1997) and 2010’s Predators (set in an unspecified year). Thanks to other recent interviews, we also know more about the setting and themes of Black’s take on the franchise. Fox CEO Stacy Snider told Variety earlier this year that The Predator is set on Earth, in a suburban neighborhood, with a father and son at its center (our guess is that they’re played by Boyd Holbrook and Jacob Tremblay).
Another big plot reveal recently came from cast member Thomas Jane, but it’s a bit of a spoiler. He spoke about playing one of several characters who is a veteran with PTSD. Jane said a character who saw Predator ships land is placed on a bus with the veterans, and someone tries to kill everyone on the bus to cover it up. “We take the bus over and we’re all like ‘f*ck that man, let’s go kill these f*cking Predators ourselves’.” SyFy theorizes Holbrook’s character is the character who saw the Predator ships. Interestingly, this would be one of many Shane Black films (like Iron Man 3 and Lethal Weapon) to touch on the theme of PTSD.
The Predator pisses off the wrong guys this August 3rd, 2018.
