The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Cast Weighed In On The Heated MCU Debate About Captain America’s Beard

Forget for a moment about the impending showdown between the Avengers and Thanos after he wiped out half the universe. There’s an arguably more pressing issue to discuss, and that involves Captain America’s facial hair. Of course, we are free to wonder why the first Avengers: Endgame trailer revealed that Steve Rogers decided to shave after the events of Infinity War. It’s an inconsistency that has nagged at me, even while focusing on the quantum realm and how the superheros might defeat the Mad Titan. Well, the time has come to address the beard.

This is important, people. Depressed folks are prone to letting grooming fall by the wayside, so how did Cap (who was reeling from the loss of his best friend, Bucky Barnes) gather the energy to shave off his magnificent beard, hmm I’m anxiously awaiting the Russo Brothers’ explanation, but in the meantime, this weekend’s Endgame press conference (where half the seats were left empty as a fitting tribute for “the fallen”) did at least address Cap’s beard in general. The cast members who were present voted on whether they preferred Cap with or without facial hair, and here’s how it went down in video form as captured by the New York Times‘ Kyle Buchanan. (We’ll tally in a moment.)

Votes For Bearded Cap – 6: Chris Hemsworth, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Joe and Anthony Russo

Votes For Smooth-Shaven Cap – 3: Paul Rudd, Danai Gurira, Karen Gillan

No Vote: Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner

Voted For Both Sides: Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige

And we have a winner! That is, until Chris Evans’ velvet pants showed up to steal the show from the beard.

In related news, GMA aired some footage from Endgame. It’s the same stuff that was screened at CinemaCon last week, but now everyone can see Captain Marvel quarreling a bit with her fellow superheroes before Thor pulls a playground move in the most Asgardian way.

Avengers: Endgame arrives on April 26.
