AEW’s Young Bucks And Lucha Brothers Faced Off Again At AAA Verano De Escándalo

AAA

Verano de Escándalo is typically AAA‘s last major show before Triplemanía and this year’s show included performers from their new American partner company (and new company in general), All Elite Wrestling. While it didn’t clearly set up any AEW involvement in AAA’s biggest show of the year on August 3 (on which we already know Cain Velasquez will be performing), it did seem include an important moment in the months-long, inter-promotional feud between the Young Bucks and the Lucha Brothers.

The first appearances in AAA by wrestlers representing AEW was at Rey de Reyes in March when Cody (Rhodes) showed up to make a speech about the relationships between the two companies, then the Young Bucks showed up after the main event to confront their rivals the Lucha Brothers (Fénix and Pentagón Jr.), who had just won the AAA World Tag Team Championships. The Bucks, who it sounded like most of the AAA audience had never seen before, defeated the Lucha Brothers to win the tag titles, then retained the championship in a rematch at AEW Double or Nothing on May 25.

In contrast to how the teams were presented at Double or Nothing, the Young Bucks were the clear heels when they defended their championships against the luchadores again at Verano de Escándalo on June 16. Matt Jackson stole Pentagón Jr’s mask at one point, but the luchador got his revenge by pinning the elder Buck with a package piledriver-double foot stomp combination move to regain the AAA World Tag Team Championship. The crowd got more and more invested in the match as it went along and was hot for the win.

The teams will continue what Matt tweeted is one of the Young Bucks’ “greatest rivalries” at Fyter Fest on June 29, where they will be on opposite sides of a six-man tag – The Elite (Kenny Omega and the Bucks) vs. The Lucha Brothers and a TBA wrestler replacing PAC.

An appearance by AEW’s Cody was mentioned in advertising and by English commentary towards the beginning of the show, but that didn’t end up coming to pass. If that match with Taurus (who teamed with Blue Demon Jr. against Psycho Clown and Rey Wagner in the Verano de Escándalo main event) that Konnan brought up at Rey de Reyes ends up coming to pass at Triplemanía or another event, it will have to be set up in the future.

Verano de Escándalo also included a mixed tag team match of Laredo Kid and Taya vs. Daga and Tessa Blanchard, a crazy trios match of Aero Star, Pagano, and Puma King vs. Chessman, Monster Clown, and Killer Kross (with Scarlett Bordeaux), Faby Apache vs. the most despicable heel referee on the planet, El Hijo del Tirantes, and more. You can watch the whole show on AAA’s twitch channel with a $5 monthly subscription.
