From Rocket’s Haircut To Tony Stark’s Alpacas: The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Deleted Scenes, Ranked

Marvel Studios

Even today, the day that Avengers: Endgame is finally available on-demand for viewers who are too impatient for the film’s DVD and Blu-ray editions on August 13th, Marvel’s blockbuster is still making money at the box office. It recently passed Avatar‘s world record and secured Zoe Zaldana’s claims to bankability, but no, that’s not enough. The superhero juggernaut is going to keep making money, especially now that Endgame is available for purchase on most major digital platforms. This includes the deleted scenes, which have already been making the rounds online.

Interestingly, the six scenes ranked below (which you can also watch after our rankings) do not include an unused sequence featuring the movie’s “Smart Hulk,” which was added for Endgame‘s theatrical re-release in June. And that’s perfectly fine! The six cut scenes that audiences who opt for the digital edition that includes all bonus materials are still in for a treat. There’s more of Tony and Rocket’s enjoyable banter, more of Rocket and Thor’s misadventures in Asgard, and, um, that “taking a knee” scene.

After the light in Tony Stark’s chest piece goes out, Pepper Potts tearfully gives him a final kiss and breaks down. Steve Rogers, Thor and many of the other Avengers look on, but that’s where the scene ends in Endgame‘s theatrical cut. Had Joe and Anthony Russo included just a little bit more before the funeral, however, audiences would have then witnessed a short sequence in which Carol Danvers, T’Challa, Peter Quill, and the other survivors all took a knee to honor the fallen hero. It’s a sweet moment, but between Tony’s death and the funeral scene, the sequence was already quite long.

Speaking of Tony, his interactions with his father Howard — during his and Rogers’ trip back to a S.H.I.E.L.D. installation during the 1970s — are some of the film’s most enjoyable. This is equally due to the characters’ deep connection and actors Robert Downey Jr. and John Slattery’s performances. Despite all of this, though, it seems the tiniest bit of fat was cut from the scene. At one point, Howard asks Tony (who calls himself Potts) if he’d like a job. Tony politely rebuffs him for obvious reasons.

Speaking of Tony (again), another deleted scene includes a brief bit of banter between him and Pepper in the kitchen of their rustic home. Per their conversation, it seems that the family alpaca, whose name — I kid you not — is “Gerald,” has gotten into their garden’s plot of goji berries. It’s a “glowing endorsement” of said berries, as Tony quips, and side from the fact that this means that he has an alpaca, the scene primarily serves as a bit of character development for the pair’s relationship. Again, it’s a short, sweet moment, but it’s understandable why it was cut.

Chris Hemsworth’s “Bro” Thor stole just about every scene he was in. Many of these came about during his and Rocket’s jaunt back in time to the events of Thor: The Dark World. Between the God of Thunder’s moving conversation with his mother Frigga and Rocket’s having to slap him in the face to retain his focus, most of the sequence actually kind of saves the second Thor film from its past criticisms. Thankfully, however, the Russos didn’t go overboard with these moments, which is probably why they decided to cut a scene in which Thor complains (even more) to Rocket about the mission.

At the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, Rogers has to pilot a battered Hydra plane filled with tesseract-powered weapons and explosives into the ocean in order to save New York City and, presumably, the world. That’s how he ends up frozen, which then leads to his discovery and unfreezing by S.H.I.E.L.D. in time for the first Avengers film. But did he really have to put the plane down himself It’s a question that has bugged Marvel fans (of the movies and the comics) for years, and per this Endgame deleted scene, it’s bothered Rhodey a lot too.

And that’s how we come to the best of the six deleted scenes: Tony shaving Rocket’s head. The surviving Avengers are at their best when they’re griping with one another. It’s a dynamic that’s as old as the original comics. Marvel Studios and director Joss Whedon smartly put it front and center in The Avengers, and the Russos continue the tradition throughout Endgame. A scene that survives involves Tony, Hulk, and Natasha Romanoff realizing that three of the stones were in New York in 2012. A scene that doesn’t involves Tony shaving Rocket’s head. They should put it back.
