The Referee For WWE Hell In A Cell’s Main Event Explained Its Controversial Finish

This Sunday, the main event of WWE’s Hell In A Cell pay-per-view was so poorly received that it had the audience chanting for the competition. Seth Rollins and ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt wrestled a crazy no disqualification bout inside the cage that ended in a referee stoppage, which, though it’s not the same thing as a DQ ending, many found to be a very unsatisfying way to end that type of match.

Today on WWE’s new talk show, The Bump, the company offered a kayfabe explanation for why Rollins vs. Fiend ended the way it did from the official himself. After host Evan Mack says that he was disappointed by the behavior of the Sacramento crowd and compared them to a child acting like a brat after not getting all the Christmas presents they wanted, Kayla Braxton read a quote from HIAC main event referee Rod Zapata explaining his officiating:

“With Bray motionless and Seth clearly doing whatever it was going to take to win that match… I had to think of the competitors’ safety and at that moment, I did what I thought was best.”
